Dry Spell (Spring 2006)
Using a flood of fast-paced, athletic dancing, driving
music, surprising images and hilarious skits, Dry Spell
wonders why our lives are jammed with crap and when will
a good rain change this crap.
"The first 20 minutes of "Dry Spell" are
alone more than worth the price of admission, with tantalizing,
energizing choreography and great music, followed by
a hilarious revival-style monologue by dancer (and actor,
apparently) Josh Larson. Larson brings the same barely
controlled bull-in-a-china-shop power to his spoken role
as he does to his dancing, making him the perfect choice
for this part.
Stephen Brown's choreography is highly
entertaining, if sometimes just plain weird. His strength
is in his ability to acknowledge both the frailties
and fortes of men and women (and their sexuality as well
- the company throws in a comic riff about nudity,
a
subject that has become its tongue-in-cheek staple).
With the scaled-down props, it might be a little more
traditional as far as choreography style goes than
in previous SB Dance concerts, but it's still anything
but
ordinary - except in Brown's world, of course, where
humor, satire, language and movement come together
in a cheeky homage to nothing but the talent of his own
cast."
